The Cliffs of Moher is a can’t miss moment if you are in Ireland. You might recognize the natural phenomena from scenes in The Princess Bride or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

The cliffs are a 1.5 hour drive from Galway or 3 hours from Dublin. We had stayed outside of Galway the night before and left around 10:00 AM. We stopped in Doolin, the nearest town to the cliffs and ate lunch at the adorable and delicious Ivy Cottage.

Getting there

If you put Cliffs of Moher or Cliffs of Moher Parking into your mapping app, you’ll be directed to a large parking lot with lots of tour buses. This lot charges 8 euro per person (!) to park and then you walk across the street to join hordes of tourists on the walking path to view the cliffs. Don’t fall for it! The cliffs run the length of a jagged peninsula and there are multiple access points.

There are two cheaper options with paid parking and less crowded view points: Guerin’s Path (5 euro per person, with portable bathrooms) or Liscannor Walk (3 euro per car, no bathrooms). You can follow small signs or put either into your mapping app. We opted for Liscannor Walk. From where we parked, it was a 10-15 minute walk on a paved then gravel road with some stair steps. We were one of a handful of people rather than a large crowd. This made for a more peaceful experience and lot easier to get great photos.

• Boots: Congrats on the successful Instagram marketing, Thursday Boot Company, ya got me. I’m wearing the women’s Captains in Natural. They say to size up, I usually wear a 7.5 and ordered the 8 and they fit perfectly. No painful breaking-in period!
